An Evening Wet With Rain JKBOSE CLASS 10TH

AN EVENING WET WITH RAIN

JKBOSE CLASS 10TH POEM

BY:- Ved Pal Deep

Summary of the poem

The lyrical poem “An Evening Wet with Rain” by Ved Pal Deep explores the writer’s deep emotions during a stormy twilight. While he wanders down damp avenues, all appears silent and drenched by downpours. The man senses isolation and fatigue, having freezing limbs and weary vision. That slick terrain prompts him to ponder upon his personal battles through existence. The author broods over vanished optimism, equating his grief with skies dropping weeping water. Severe hardships resemble a partner which pulls him onwards, contributing to his misery. He similarly recalls his early youth, when life was brighter, and laments how those days vanished and cannot return. Nearing the conclusion, the creator depicts the twilight dissolving into darkness, as silhouettes settle over the landscape. He questions his ultimate goal and seems detached from the environment enclosing him. The bleak nightfall mirrors the speaker's internal heartbreak, weariness, and yearning for calmness and joyful moments.

Summary of the poem in Hindi

वेद पाल दीप की कविता "एन इवनिंग वेट विद रेन" (An Evening Wet with Rain)

An Evening Wet with Rain Poem Explanation

Poem: Stanza1

An evening wet with rain

As I walk through the lane

The heart beckons the hands to hold them with love

The mind also knows subtle signals of the breeze

Should I stand on the ground or waft with the wind!

Word Meanings:

waft (v): to (cause to) move gently through the air

beckon (v): to summon; to call

subtle (adj.): not loud, noticeable or obvious in any way

breeze (n): a light pleasant wind

Explanation: The poet describes a rainy evening as he walks down a road. The rain makes everything feel fresh and alive. His heart wishes for love and connection, wanting to hold hands with someone special. At the same time, his mind is aware of the gentle breeze blowing around him. The poet feels a conflict between staying stable on the wet ground or being free and carefree like the wind. This shows his feelings of longing for love and connection while also feeling the freedom and beauty of nature. The passage shows the poet’s mixed emotions during this rainy evening.

Stanza 2

Windows, doors, awnings of the house are wet

Cool breezes stir the leaves of the yonder banyan tree

The collar of my coat is also wet with drops of rain

All around reigns silence

Word Meanings:

awning (n): a sheet of canvas, stretched on a frame as a shelter against the sun or rain

yonder (adv): over there; at some distance in that direction

reign (v): to rule over; to be predominant; prevail

Explanation: A picture of a rainy scene is painted here by the poet. He describes how the windows, doors, and awnings of nearby houses are wet from the rain. The cool breeze gently moves the leaves of a distant banyan tree, creating a soothing atmosphere. The poet also mentions that his coat collar is wet from raindrops, explaining how soaked everything is, including himself. The final line emphasizes the quietness around him, suggesting a calm and peaceful environment despite the rain.

Stanza 3:-

My feet are cold with water seeping through my shoes

My eyes are heavy with sleep, or is it fever?

The ground is very slippery; there is no place to stand.

The mind is exhausted, looks for some spot to rest.

Word Meanings:

seep (v): to ooze out; to percolate

exhausted (adj.): extremely tired

Explanation: Discomfort and weariness during the rainy evening is expressed by the poet here. He describes his feet as cold because water has seeped into his shoes, making him feel uncomfortable. His eyes feel heavy, and he questions whether this tiredness is due to sleepiness or a possible fever, indicating he is feeling unwell. The ground is slippery from the rain, making it difficult for him to find a stable place to stand. This adds to his feelings of instability and unease. The poet’s mind is also exhausted, meaning that he is mentally drained and searching for a place to rest or find relief from his thoughts.

Stanza 4:

Loss of hope has darkened the evening of my life too

And clouds gathering in the mind shed tears as they pass

The evening of troubles, my companion, is also depressed

And takes me along, holding me by the arm.

Word Meanings:

darkened (adj.): without light

gathering (n): coming together

depressed (adj.): unhappy or without hope

Explanation: The poet talks about feeling hopeless and how it has affected his life. He compares this loss of hope to a darkening evening, suggesting that his life feels gloomy and heavy. The “clouds gathering in the mind” symbolize his worries and sadness, and when they “shed tears,” it reflects how these feelings can lead to tears or emotional pain. The idea of an “evening of troubles” means that he feels overwhelmed by difficulties, and he personifies these troubles as a companion that is also feeling down. This companion holds him by the arm, implying that his struggles are closely connected to him and are dragging him down further.

Stanza 5

In childhood, I stood alone in my courtyard

And waves of air brought the sound of cymbals

We regret that the days gone by don’t return

How to call back times past and gone!

Word Meanings:

cymbal (n): a flat round musical instrument made of brass, which makes a loud noise when hit with a stick or against another cymbal

courtyard (n): an area of flat ground outside that is partly or completely surrounded by the walls of a building

Explanation: Here, Ved Pal Deep reflects on his childhood memories. He describes a time when he stood alone in his courtyard, possibly feeling lonely during those moments. The “waves of air” carrying the sound of cymbals create a sense of joy and liveliness from the past, perhaps representing celebrations or happy moments that he experienced. The poet expresses regret that those carefree days of childhood are gone and cannot return. This sense of loss is powerful, as he wonders how he can bring back those happy times. The longing to relive the past shows the poet’s feelings of nostalgia and sadness, showing that he deeply misses the joy and simplicity of his earlier years.

Stanza 6

The evening prepares to go to sleep in the lap of night

Slowly, softly just as the sky’s feet touch the ground

Shadows of trees rest in the dark tank

As some passing cloud casts a shadow over hills.

Word Meanings:

lap (n): the top surface of the upper part of the legs of a person who is sitting down

casts (v): to send light or shadow in a particular direction

Explanation: The change from evening to night is described here. The poet personifies the evening as if it is getting ready to sleep, suggesting a peaceful and gentle end to the day. The phrase “in the lap of night” creates an image of comfort and safety as night turns into the evening. The description of the sky’s feet touching the ground creates a sense of calm and peace, emphasizing the slow and soft arrival of night. The “shadows of trees” resting in a dark tank (a pond or body of water) adds to the serene imagery, as it refers to the stillness and quietness. He also mentions that a passing cloud creating a shadow over the hills makes a beautiful visual of the changing landscape as night falls.

Stanza 7

There is activity in the houses lit with electric bulbs

Moonlight laughs holding the hem of the moon.

Where is my destination? Where is the hurry?

Light of the earthen lamp in a wayside modest inn awaits me.

Word Meanings:

moonlight (n): the pale light of the moon

hem (n): the bottom edge of a piece of cloth, folded up and sewn, on an item of clothing, here used metaphorically

earthen lamp (n): an oil lamp made from clay or mud with a cotton wick dipped in oil or ghee.

wayside (n): the edge of a road

modest (adj.): not large in size or amount, or not expensive

inn (n): a small hotel, usually in the villages or the countryside

Explanation: The poet notices that the houses nearby are alive with activity, as people go about their lives under the bright light of electric bulbs. This scene contrasts with his own feelings of loneliness. He describes the moonlight in a playful way, saying it “laughs” while holding onto the edge of the moon. This creates a cheerful and magical image of the night sky. The poet then starts to reflect on his own life, asking himself questions like “Where am I going?” and “Why am I in such a hurry?” This shows that he is taking a moment to think about his journey and feels that he doesn’t need to rush. Lastly, he mentions a small inn with a simple earthen lamp that is waiting for him. This symbolizes comfort and a place where he can relax and find peace.
